This brass Egyptian revival Inkwell ( 1920's) with hinged lid and original glass insert also has a rocking blotter with it. The inkwell has a two arm pen rest across the front side. This has Egyptian motif around the top with engraved detailing at top edge and the raised Pharaoh's head on front side. Push the small raised lever at back edge of lid to open and reveal clear glass inkwell insert inside. Measures 2.75 inches square at base, height is 3 inches. The rocking blotter has the original wood rocker that would have been covered with blotter paper. The screw knob at the top lets you add that paper. There are two pharaoh heads on the top of the brass blotter. Having never used a blotter I found it interesting to know that prior to the development of the blotter, absorbent materials like sand had to be scattered onto the paper, or loose sheets of blotting paper had to be carefully applied to finished documents. Using a whole sheet of blotting paper could create bleeding and smears, which would look unsightly, forcing the writer to start all over again. The ink blotter made the blotting process much more efficient.
